Types of outdoor blinds
- Zipscreens: the edges of the fabric are held in side channels by a zip, so the blind stays put in wind and seals against insects. They’re the top choice for exposed decks and alfresco areas.
- Channel and wire-guided blinds: run on side channels or tensioned cables. Cheaper than zipscreens and fine for patios with some shelter.
- Straight drop blinds: the simplest and most affordable option, for sheltered areas where wind isn’t a problem.
- Clear PVC blinds: keep the view while blocking wind and rain. Popular for entertaining areas used through winter.
Choosing the right outdoor fabric
Outdoor blinds come in three main fabric types. Sunscreen mesh cuts glare and heat while you can still see out, and it lets the breeze through. Canvas and acrylic block the sun completely and give full privacy. Clear or tinted PVC stops wind and rain. On a west-facing patio like many in Point Vernon, a darker sunscreen mesh usually gives the best balance of shade and view.
Awnings for windows and doors
Where you want shade without enclosing a space, an awning is the better fit. Fixed awnings over windows block high summer sun before it reaches the glass. Folding-arm awnings extend out over a deck or courtyard and wind back in when you don’t need them. Both are an effective way to cut heat on north and west-facing windows.
Motorised outdoor blinds
Large blinds and awnings are heavy to wind by hand. Motorised systems run on a remote or wall switch, and can be fitted with wind and sun sensors that raise the blind in strong gusts or lower it when the sun comes around. For a big alfresco with three or four blinds, motors make them far more likely to actually get used.
Built for coastal conditions
Salt air, humidity and summer storms are hard on outdoor products. We specify powder-coated or marine-grade hardware, fabrics made for UV exposure, and channel systems that suit the wind your site gets. Waterfront homes in Urangan and Torquay need tougher specs than a sheltered alfresco in Eli Waters, and we quote accordingly.
Outdoor blind FAQs
Can outdoor blinds be left down all the time?
Sunscreen mesh blinds and zipscreens can stay down in normal weather. Raise any outdoor blind in storms and very strong winds to avoid damage.
Will a zipscreen keep mozzies out?
Mostly, yes. When it’s fully down, the zip edges seal into the side channels and a weighted bottom rail sits on the floor. Gaps can form if the floor is uneven, so we check levels at the measure and set the bottom rail to suit.
How do I stop mould on outdoor blinds?
In humid weather, don’t roll blinds up while they’re wet. Let them dry down first, then raise them. Hose off dust and salt every few months with fresh water and a soft brush. Mould usually starts where dirt and moisture sit together.
