Plantation Shutters in Hervey Bay

Shutters are the one window covering that works as well in a 1970s beach house in Scarness as in a new build in Eli Waters. They give you privacy, light control and airflow in one product, they don’t gather dust like fabric, and they last far longer than blinds. The trade-off is cost. They’re the most expensive option per window, so it pays to choose the right material for each room.
Timber, PVC and aluminium shutters
Most Hervey Bay homes end up with a mix. Here’s how we match the material to the room:
- Timber shutters: the warmest, most natural look, and lighter than PVC, so larger panels are possible. They suit living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, and they’re the first choice for character homes. Keep them out of wet areas and away from direct salt spray.
- PVC shutters: look close to painted timber but won’t swell or warp with moisture. Use them in bathrooms, ensuites, laundries and kitchens, and in homes a street or two back from the water.
- Aluminium shutters: the toughest option. They’re made for outdoor use, so they suit patios, verandahs and balconies, and they’re the safe choice for waterfront homes in Urangan, Torquay and along the Esplanade.
Blade size, colour and opening style
Beyond the material, three choices change how your shutters look and work:
- Blade width: wider blades give a more open view and a modern look. Narrower blades suit smaller windows and older homes.
- Colour: whites and off-whites are the most popular and match most window trims. Timber can also be stained to match floors or furniture.
- Opening style: hinged panels for most windows, bi-fold panels for wide openings, and sliding tracks for doors, so you can still walk through.
Shutters for sliding doors and odd-shaped windows
Sliding doors are where shutters often make the biggest difference. Panels on a sliding track let you close off the glass for privacy or heat, then stack them to one side when you want to use the door. Angled, arched and raked windows can also be shuttered with custom-shaped frames. They cost more and take longer to make, but they finish a room properly where a blind can’t.
Why shutters suit the Fraser Coast climate
Hervey Bay’s summer sun is hard on fabric. Blinds on north and west-facing windows can fade and weaken within a few years, while shutters hold up much longer. With the blades tilted, you can block direct sun and still keep the breeze moving through the house, which is how a lot of Fraser Coast homes stay comfortable without the air conditioning running all day.
How our shutter installation works
We bring samples of each material and colour to your home, measure every opening, and give you a written quote with the price for each window. Once you approve it, the shutters are made to order. On installation day we fit the frames, hang the panels, adjust each one so it closes square, and take all the packaging away. Plantation shutter FAQs
Do plantation shutters block out all light?
No. Closed shutters block most light, but some gets through around the edges and between the blades. They’re fine for most bedrooms. If you need a fully dark room for shift work or a nursery, we can often fit a blockout roller blind behind the shutters.
How long do plantation shutters last?
Much longer than fabric blinds. Well-made shutters that are fitted properly can stay in place for as long as you own the house. The hinges and blade tension may need adjusting over the years, which is a quick job.
Will shutters fit if my window has a winder or handle?
Usually, yes. We check handle clearance at the measure. The frame can be set further out, or deeper panels used, so the blades clear the handle when they tilt.
